Keeping Elderly Warm This Winter

Posted: 21 Nov 2019

It’s the time of year again where the temperature suddenly starts to drops as we begin preparation for

the festive period.

The majority of us are able to detect these changes in the weather, however for the elderly generation,

it is more difficult. This is because as people get older, their bodies find it harder to regulate

temperatures. This means that elderly people are less likely to notice when the weather gets colder,

but are most likely to be affected by it. Therefore, it is extremely important to know how we can help

them prepare for the cold weather. We recommend:

  • Lots of cups of tea/coffee/hot chocolate
  • Layers of clothing, especially thermals and vests,
  • Back and hand warmers which can be heated in the microwave.
  • Hot water bottles
  • Electric Blankets (should be checked regularly)
  • Gentle indoor exercises
  • Warm soups
